Join us as we welcome David DeLoach, ISES Treasurer 2006/2007, as he shares leadership lessons he's learned over the years working at the WALT DISNEY WORLD® Resort in Orlando, Florida.  David will spend a few minutes showcasing at a high level some of the events he's produced at the MAGIC KINGDOM® Park. Then, he'll discuss some of the experiences that have taught him some very valuable lessons in leadership that can be applied to Special Event Management, ISES Chapters, and business in general.  Twelve leadership lessons will be reviewed and explained in detail with examples of how David has applied them to the teams he has led.  This promises to be a valuable session that will generate ideas for you to use in your own business to improve service and productivity

Canadian Affiliate Esprit Accolades

A number of Canadian Affiliate ISES members won awards at the 2006 ISES Esprit Awards Celebration at Eventworld 2006. Along with individual event awards, Canadian companies in both Toronto and Calgary took home awards for two of the three Best Team Effort categories. Impressive considering that the requirement for this category is that the majority of suppliers working on the submitted show are ISES members!

A belated congratulation to all the winning Canadian members! You can view the listing for all of the ISES Esprit winners by clicking here.

We hope to see Vancouver Chapter companies entering to take home the hardware at Eventworld in Montreal next August!

Getting Our Story Out There!

ISES Vancouver has started collecting stories to form a PR package of our members. Some information is already in this newsletter. Tell us about a special event story, a successful show, something that can interest the media. We want to be prepared to hand over a media kit when asked about our members. This information will also be sent to ISES Headquarters in Chicago, for inclusion into the International PR kit for the same reason. Get your stories in by the New Year!

Strategic Partner Profile: Performance Visual Works Inc.
Marc Chan, Principal an Co-Founder of Performance Visual Works,
interviewed by Alice Zhou

Performance Visual Works Inc. began as Performance Videowall Inc. in 1995, with two passionate and creative individuals named Martes Farrugia, and Marc Chan.

This company is not your average AV rental shop! Performance Visual Works provides show system integration, production equipment rentals, production services, content creation, and interactive playback programming for film & TV, tradeshows, and special events. They even provide logistical services including permits, power, trucking, & advancing for tours and events.

The combined experience of Martes’ expertise as a media producer, and Marc’s technical marketing experience has helped them carve out a niche market in providing unconventional production services to Film and TV, Advertising, PR, Special Event producers, Government agencies, and large corporations.

Marc is most proud of an event called Millennium Experience, which was a Christmas to New Year’s week long celebration at Whistler designed for 200 guests in the year 2000. Performance provided a sweeping 60 feet wide time code controlled, multi-image wall of video with 74 monitors and screens , worked months in advance with out of town event producers, and created hours of content and programming for the video. This event was so successful, that it received several Best Event Awards for their client.

When asked the most bizarre visual projects they have been involved with, Marc excitedly describes the human electronic polling machine (imagine a person walking on the street with an LED display sign above him, supported by a custom made frame and back pack with a hand held controller polling public opinions); and a 360 degree presentation system featuring 21 screens and 12 speakers in a 254 square feet circular trade show booth that has toured Asia, Europe, and US!

When asked about the most challenging event, Marc tells me with a grin, of a Canada Day Celebration where Performance flawlessly provided the visual needs of 4 large concerts, managing 4 remote crews in 4 times zones on the same day.

It was really refreshing to speak with Marc Chan, because you can hear the passion in his voice in pushing the boundaries of creativity to help tell their client’s story by applying technology and equipment creatively. Marc and Performance strive to be a different company to both service and challenge their clients to see, and produce events, outside the box.

Member News: Q1 Production Technologies

The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth

While visitors to Canada's famed Calgary Stampede marvelled at the spectacular nightly Grandstand show, few could begin to comprehend the complexities of the technical magic that truly does make this the greatest outdoor show on Earth.

Vancouver ISES member Q1 Production Technologies supplied all the lighting for this year's 90-minute extravaganza, presented nightly from July 7th -16th. The show featured a rotating stage with four hydraulic elevators, 2 23' rotating clock towers, 2 giant LED Videotron screens, all sorts of moving set pieces, continuous fireworks, a helicopter, and 280 singers, dancers and acrobats in non-stop motion.

The lighting is a show in itself, and Lighting Designer/Director Pierre Marleau of Orange Frog Productions, along with Q1's Tracey Ploss, had a number of things to take into consideration when choosing the ideal equipment. Marleau used 96 VL3000 Spots and 26 VL2500 Spots and was thrilled with the results, remarking that, "for the first time we could light a scene with front gobos and still have enough light to see the performers, and it's the first time that the camera crew didn't complain about a lack of lumination on stage". Additional equipment included 100 Color Kinetics LED Color Blast 12's, 8 Lycian M2 2.5 Follow Spots, 6 F-100 DMX Foggers and 26 racks of 4 Par 64 ACL's. Q1's Ploss said his great crew was especially pleased with how the Vari-Lite fixtures performed in extremes of heat, rain, hail, wind and dust storms, adding that when audiences are prepared to sit through all sorts of conditions, the equipment has to deliver.
