Event Review: Insight Into Olympic Games Special Events & Ceremonies

A rich, content-filled evening of Olympic event information was presented at the inaugural event of the 2006/2007 ISES Vancouver season, on September 27th at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver.

Over 150 members and guests had the pleasure of hearing the amazing behind the scenes story of the coordination and execution of the 2004 Athens Summer Games Opening and Closing Ceremonies, from Mr. Josh McCall, CEO of Jack Morton Worldwide and producer of this incredible event.  Mr. McCall first showed us a video summary of the breath taking presentation his company coordinated involving close to 10,000 people, involving pyrotechnics, water, costumes, lasers, staging, props, etc.  He told us about some of the logistical challenges they encountered such as housing shortages, lack of rehearsal space, budget cutbacks, and working with a venue with the possibility of not having a roof built in time!  (Yes, “Plan B” was used!). The audience was inspired by the dedication, resilience and the tremendous skill (branding, creative & technical design, logistical & volunteer coordination, animation, sound & videography…) demonstrated by this event production group to successfully execute a show of this caliber - which was viewed by over 4 billion people worldwide!

Bringing home the Olympic opportunity message to us were two guests from the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC). Mr. Marti Kulich, Program Director, Ceremonies, for VANOC explained the complexities of the full startup of VANOC and how future departments will come on-line as we get closer to the games. He explained that the VANOC division of Cultures & Ceremonies is responsible for the opening & closing of the games as well as welcoming events for each team of athletes at the various athlete villages, medal ceremonies each night in both Vancouver and Whistler, and the Cultural Olympiad and Olympics Arts Festival slated to start five weeks before, and to continue through the Olympic Games. All of these are areas that provide ISES members with opportunities to get involved.

He described the potential requirements for the many Olympic corporate sponsors, their events and displays, as well as various government houses to be built by participating Olympic countries; and to count in the many test games and large scale events that will coming to Vancouver preceding the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games of 2010, that also offer excellent business opportunities for our membership.

John McLaughlin, Vice President and Comptroller of VANOC gave us an appreciation that VANOC will be looking for value for their dollar, and that a value-added bid response, that can be shown to be delivered on time, will have a competitive edge.

Betty MacLeod, Senior Manager, Olympic Business Development from RBC Royal Bank, explained that many opportunities for companies large and small exist as main contractors, and suppliers to contractors.

Web sites to assist our memberships are available below:

Your ISES Vancouver Board will organize workshops that will help educate our members on how to find and respond to bids listed for the 2010 games via the BC Ministry of Economic Development, BC Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games Secretariat. Stay tuned for more information.

October Event Postponement

It has just come to our attention that there are many more changes to the CSEP program than originally anticipated when we first invited Julia to speak. ISES Vancouver’s goal is to offer excellent and relevant meeting/seminar products. As a result, we will be postponing the CSEP BootCamp workshop and therefore Julia Rutherford Silvers’ seminar to a later date.

Below is a description of the CSEP changes that has come from ISES International headquarters.

We apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused and look forward to announcing the launch of the new CSEP program in early 2007.

Changes to the CSEP Exam and Blueprint Content
As many of you may already know, it was announced that ISES signed a contract with a new test administrator - Schroeder Measurement Technologies (SMT).  SMT is a full-service international testing company serving the needs of licensing boards and credentialing agencies with a wide range of test development and administration services. SMT's testing products and services are the finest available and are designed to serve SMT's clients by using the most appropriate psychometric and technological approaches available.

SMT and the ISES certification committee have been working diligently to review and improve the existing CSEP exam.  The new exam is set to debut in January 2007.

The ISES Certification Committee closed new enrollment in the CSEP candidate pipeline in June. The pipeline will reopen in January 2007, following the new CSEP program debut. CSEP candidates will be sent revised study materials at no cost. In addition, CSEP exam preparation courses based on the new exam content will be offered at The Special Event Show 2007 in Los Angeles, prior to the availability of the new online exam program.   Additional information regarding the new CSEP exam will be distributed as soon as it is available. Please continue to check the ISES website, the E-News, the chapter E-News and emails for current information regarding the new CSEP program. We are confident that the new exam will offer global excellence and continued credibility for the CSEP certification. Please contact ISES Headquarters if you have specific questions regarding the changeover to the new CSEP exam.

Member News: Alan's Award Winning Photography

"Earlier this year we were asked to help our client with a marketing and branding project. The catch was the project was in the Mediterranean on board a 5 sail clipper ship for 9 days traveling throughout Italian ports. The task was compounded by the fact that all power onboard was 220 volts. We were chosen to deliver 125, 5 x 7 photos per day to incentive travel guests. The project involved many evenings working until 4 in the morning, so this turned into a serious working "holiday"

The client was so pleased with the results that we created a branded multimedia DVD presentation for their guests. The client was so happy we have been hired to create the memories for their Lanai Hawaii next incentive convention."

Note from Martes:
Alan Gough was our photographer at the Olympics event held on September 27th. Here is a link to a slide show that he produced with the event photos he had taken … and yes had ready for us to view by 4am the next morning!
