Christmas/Holiday Party Contribution

What an amazing party!
Held on November 23 at the spectacular Azure night club. Everyone that board members spoke to during and after the event had nothing but positive comments. It was great to team up with the local chapter of MPI and we look forward to future partnerships. Special thanks to Alice Zhou for spearheading the party organization and to all of the ISES Vancouver Board for their volunteer support.

Through donations via admission, raffles and entertainers ISES Vancouver was able to donate $500 to the Starlight Starbright Children’s Charity. Azure night club also donated $200 on our behalf. So good fun and good deeds done by all. Thank you to all who attended, volunteered and sponsored the event.

Making Magical Memories Review - November 17, 2006

November 17th marked the first dark and stormy night that we experienced this windy winter. Over broken trees and power blackouts, more than 40 people managed to make their way downtown to the Empire Landmark Hotel to hear Mr. David DeLoach’s seminar. David is a personable and dynamic speaker, who truly loves what he does. He shared his own experiences and life work philosophies very candidly. David showed us why and how he developed and applied his twelve leadership lessons and how they effect both his fabulous “day job” at Disney and his volunteer commitments to ISES. We look forward to seeing David again at future ISES events!

Strategic Partner Profile: Pedersens Rentals

Harry and Barbara Pedersen founded Pedersen’s in 1949 in Vancouver, Canada as an off-premises catering company. Today, we are the largest celebration services company in the Pacific Northwest with branches in Victoria and Seattle.

Our catering background created a strong foundation for the company and in 1968, after 20 years of catering, Pedersen’s evolved into a full time equipment rental operation. We have always been dedicated to providing the exceptional service and quality products necessary in creating a perfect event.

Over the years Pedersen’s has been fortunate enough to serve a wide variety of events with international exposure including the Chinese President’s visit to Seattle 2006 and US President’s Clinton and Bush visits to Seattle 2006. We have also supplied many corporations such as PepsiCo, Microsoft, Starbucks, Vulcan, Oracle, Jaguar Motor Co., Volkswagen International, Lexus and Ford Mexico when their travel has brought them to Vancouver or Seattle.

Pedersen’s has also been able to offer its continued support at a local level assisting in the success of charitable functions for organizations such as the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, the Canadian Cancer Society, The Vancouver Hospital Foundation, Vancouver Playhouse, Poncho, Arts Umbrella, The Museum of Flight, Canuck Place and Canuck Foundation and many others. This variety of events also includes many special private endeavours.

Over the years Pedersen’s has seen many changes and in 1990 a second location was opened in Victoria to service Vancouver Island.  In 1999 Pedersen’s Rentals celebrated 50 years of service with the opening of a new 35,000 square foot facility and in 2001, we opened our Seattle location. After just 5 years in the Seattle Marketplace we are fortunate enough to expand into 26,000 feet. In 2006 Pedersen’s was named in to top 30 Rental companies by Special Event Magazine. We have been fortunate to maintain the family identity with second and third generations still active within the business. Company President Bill Pedersen and wife Albina, daughters Rhonda and Kim, and son in law Dave all contribute to the daily operations at Pedersen’s.

As leaders in our industry, we attempt to anticipate the growing needs of our customers and pride ourselves in the variety of specialty items that we continually add to our inventory. As the "Celebration Experts", we pledge to make every event an event worth remembering.

Sincerely,

The Pedersens

New Member Interview: Brock Lumsden of BLD Decor
by Alice Zhou

I had the great pleasure of meeting Brock Lumsden from BLD Décor and Scenery at the September International Special Events Society. He was kind enough to generously come do a 3 hour presentation on Event Design for my event planning class. I learned a ton from his presentation and stories and would like to share with you.

Background: Brock came out of design school, very experienced with graphics, arts, even costume design. He worked many years in theatre, so great experience in creating set, lighting and building the story using props and color. Some of his portfolio includes:

  • World Championships in Athletics - Edmonton
  • Special Olympic World Winter Games - Toronto
  • Opening Confederation Bridge to PEI

Presentation spaces and party design for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Technical evaluation visits.

  1. Everything that went astray in an event can often be avoided if planned properly;  Events go awry often due to inexperience or lack of foresight.
  2. When designing an event, work on Micro level but also Macro level.  Have the big picture in mind, and know what small details you need to focus on.
  3. Pick your battles, when you work with thousands of dancers, you can’t make everything perfect, so see which are the highlights, and make those a perfect 10!
  4. In event design, lighting is your best friend, you can saturate a large space by using color or lighting.
  5. Use the different elements of design: Color, shape, texture, focus, line.
  6. Make sure the entrance is memorable, because this is the moment of wow, but this effect will wear off in 3-4 minutes, as guests focus on the details in front of them.
  7. Always have a friendly working relationship with all your core team: graphic design, florist, etc. Some event companies make a point to work with the same suppliers no matter where they travel to, so even if their event is in California, they ship their whole team there.  With experience, you get what you need - when you ask for it.
  8. If you’d like to stretch your décor budget for a large space, instead of trying to dress the entire space, focus your dollars and energy into one key area and make it spectacular.
  9. Think about the event as a story, so a beginning, middle and end, so use your space to add more to the story to create the right mood and atmosphere.
  10. Don’t be afraid to try different staging opportunities – in the round, thrust, alley. Playing with your event’s physical space can have dramatic results.
  11. Creating physical intimacy is critical to venue design, a grandiose space could come across empty and cold if you don’t have enough enclosure.
  12. Ideas for special effects for your event: Candle lit pathway from venue to parking, KabUki Fabric Drops for entrances or surprise reveals, not announcing celebrity singers until they go on, etc.

If you like these suggestions, you can go see the amazing set designs Brock has done in the past at www.bldesign.ca & www.blddecorscenery.com
