Buffet Blowout Review

Winners of the People's Choice Award, The Butler Did It Catering Company and Bright Ideas and Unique Events
The re-vamped Buffet Blowout made its debut on April 25th at the Vancouver Art Gallery, as a friendly competition and fundraiser.
The ISES Vancouver community made up of members, sponsors and friends truly came together and stepped up to the plate, to make this a great event and support the Adoptive Families Association of BC.
Held at the Vancouver Art Gallery, site of the very first ISES Vancouver meeting in 1994, three teams of caterers, décor and design companies came together to create a feast for the senses.
The Elements!
The Elements: Earth, Wind & Fire, were each represented and interpreted by sight, sounds, smell, taste and touch through the creative décor and menus presented by each team.
WIND: Upon entering the display foyer, guests were greeted on the left by the cool, whimsical, windblown fantasy-land created by BLD Décor and Scenery. The food was much like the décor, whimsical and light. A mixture of seafood and vegetarian fare, served in bouches and on pain melba, the taste was delicate and subtle. Served by the new kid in catering town, Reflections Gastronomie.
FIRE: To the right, the night was blasted up a notch by the sultry, velvety smooth heat of the FIRE display where performance artist Kira Schaffer with the Firebelly Performance Society, was the live action central display, serving up the spicy heat for Peake of Catering. Peake was in top form. Living up to their element, the food was spicy and full flavoured. Chef David’s menu fit the climate and truly brought the fire into the palate. The Asian noodles had a wonderful heat and texture that was reminiscent of Southeast Asia. Created by Wow! Productions and Upright Décor.
EARTH: Under the rotunda, one was led into the Garden of Eating where just about everything was edible, from flowers in the wheatgrass, to much of earth’s abundance spilling out in a garden delight emulating many creatures of the earth. To say that their food was earthy would be an understatement. It is said that you must eat with the eyes before the palate and well, we were sated as we walked into the room. The Butler Did It, Bright Ideas Event Coordinators Ltd. and Unique Events.
The contrast from one group to another served to exemplify the depth of talent and creativity that makes up the professional event industry in our city.
The Crazy Logistics!
Take a close look at the pictures here and those posted on our event shots links. Can you believe that these great teams had only 1.5 hours to set up! All this while the gallery was still open to the public. The beauty of this event was not just in the details, but also in the logistics. There is a lot that we can do well in this busy venue city, and turning a room around is one of them!
The Judging
A judging component was added to the Buffet Blowout this year. Thank you to our judges for taking time out of their busy culinary schedules to be a part of the Buffet Blowout. Heather Angeard, President and Co-owner of Executive Event Production Inc., home of Eat! Vancouver; Jason McRobbie freelance culinary writer with a great passion for cooking, exploring and writing; Cecilia Yong, Partner at Edible B.C. who also has a background as a pastry chef and product designer for a number of food production companies. Attendees also participated as they voted for the best overall interpretation of food and design to award The People’s Choice.

“We are really pleased to be opening in Vancouver”, said Chair Décor Etc. President Mark Jamieson, from the company’s Toronto office. “The Vancouver market is underserved and we see a unique opportunity for growth. Having a physical presence in the Vancouver area is very important to us and to our customers. And, as we look to grow, being a part of the local business community will allow us to more effectively promote our quality products and demonstrate our commitment to unparalleled customer service,” said Jamieson.

Vancouver resident Dwayne Botchar will be heading up the west coast operation. Bringing with him more than 15 years experience in the events industry and prior experience in the food and beverage industry, Dwayne is well positioned and thrilled about his new role.
“I am excited to be a part of Chair Décor Etc. in the Vancouver area”, said Botchar. “We offer the biggest and most unique selection of fabrics and accessories in the Lower Mainland. People used to have to look outside of the province to get any type of variety or quantity, but now, we’re right here in the region,” he added. “Vancouver’s vibrancy and style make it a great place to live and a terrific place to do business, and with all that is happening in and around the city now and in the near future we couldn’t be more excited,” Botchar remarked.
To support the Vancouver opening of Chair Décor Etc. the company has participated in local consumer shows. Collateral materials have been developed and a limited advertising campaign entitled “In Any Event… Covering Your Events Since 1991” will include local industry publications.
Exceeding customer expectations is paramount for Chair Décor Etc. Examples of positive feedback from satisfied customers are ‘icing on the cake’.
