Green Meeting Guide - Call for Green Suppliers

From recycling to hybrid cars to green living, you cannot escape talk of the environment today.  In a business context, the concept of sustainability - mutually reinforcing strategies for creating social, environmental and economic value holds enormous appeal.

Launching April 2008 the Green Meeting Guide is a print and online resource directory designed to help anyone who plans events in Canada find sustainable supplier options.  As an initiative of Innovolve Group www.innovolve.com, the Green Meeting Guide will allow suppliers to register specific products/service offerings that meet the category guidelines for 'green'.  The guide is intended to serve as a practical manual and industry reference tool for event planners, suppliers and buyers.  Endorsed by the Green Meeting Industry Council (GMIC), the underlying theme of the Green Meeting Guide is to advocate sustainability: local ownership, social enterprise, environmental and ecological impact.  Interested suppliers can apply to be listed in the Green Meeting Guide at www.greenmeetingguide.com.

Queen Elizabeth Park Observatory Proposal

The ISES Vancouver Board recognizes unique opportunity to add a spectacular new major event venue to Vancouver's attractions roster!

Members of the Board recently participated  in  a meeting regarding the private proposal to build an observation tower at the top of the Queen Elizabeth Park next to the Bloedel Conservatory.  The proposal is being spearheaded by renowned Vancouver architect Richard Henriquez (who designed the new gardens at the top of the park which include the fountains and wedding chapel). The 150-foot observation tower would regain the magnificent 360 degree views of Vancouver, Mount Baker, and the Straight of Georgia from the top of the park which have been lost due to 25 years of tree growth.

As we all know, unique large scale event space is difficult to come by in Vancouver.  The Henriquez tower would include three levels of potential rental space for weddings, cocktail parties, fundraisers etc.  The main 150-foot event level will sit 150 for dinner, 300 for a cocktail reception; however, the roof and first viewing levels could potentially absorb another hundred or so while showcasing the spectacular view of Vancouver we are all proud of.

The Parks Board agrees that recapturing the views from the Queen Elizabeth Park is important, and they have now asked for public opinion and a staff report on the Henriquez proposal. This project is approaching a critical stage of approval on Monday January 28th at the next Parks Board meeting where the project will either be shut down or passed on to the next phase of design.  It is obvious how this new space will benefit the event and tourism industries; however, if we do not speak up we will likely lose this opportunity.

Attached is a link to the project summary on the tower as well as a list of contacts at the Parks Board. Each of us should send the Park Board Commissioners and Staff a brief note to expressing our support of this proposal (if that is how you feel).  We will also need one or two people from our industry to read out their brief comments on the 28th.  Virginia Bird with Pottinger & Associates, the firm handling the community consultation portion of the development, is available to help write letters, compose emails, whatever support you require to deliver your comments to the Parks Board on the proposed tower prior to the 28th.  Her contact information is as follows:

Virginia Bird - bird_virginia@yahoo.ca - 604-801-5008 (work) - 604-619-0837 (cell).
